Who is GoatEars?
|
Well, I suppose I should tell you I am. My name is Carly, I'm 21 originally from Washington State, blah blah blah. Well, I actually just moved back to Seattle after having spent two super cool years in Eugene, OR going to school (Art History major, I am, But I'll get back to that). I am a libra (woo hoo) and hmm, I'm queer, and I love Duncan yo yo's. Shit man, I don't know what else. Perhaps I'll get inspired soon. Oh, my beautiful boo, DragonEars, calls me GoatEars cause I have both tragus (or is it Tragi?)pierced and "Tragus" in Latin means "goat" and I call her DragonEars cause one time I misheard her and well, I don't know you had to be there. Oh, I guess I should speak of my sexuality briefly. I'm queer. Seems simple enough to me. Yeah, I look like a stereotype (shaved head-I look like the middle pic, tattoos-4 beautiful black celtic ones, a number of piercings, I wear carpenters overall a lot and I don't cater to fucked up fascist beauty standards), but that doesn't mean that all gay people are the same, that's ludicrous. Just as to say all Breeders are the same because more than a few straight women have long hair and wear make-up. I don't hate men, by any means (as a matter of fact, I know a great many very very cool guys). Yes, I listen to Ani DiFranco (and yes, I think she's changed artistically a bit in the last couple of years, a little more than I would have liked, but oh well she's still cool). Oh, this has nothing to do with sexuality but I just thought of something I can't stand. Okay, so I look like I'm 12, I'm 5'1" and like 115 lbs. or something, okay so I bring this up cause what is it with people coming up to me and treating me like a child. The other day I was standing outside work smoking and this guy walks up and says, "hey shorty, can I rub yur head, pleeease?" To which I did not respond kindly. First thing, don't fucking touch the shorn heads of strangers (whichever gender and whatever age), it's rude. Secondly, don't assume anything about anyone (age, temperment, etc. etc.) it makes things a lot easier. Anyway. Oh, as far as feminism goes (being a feminist is about being a woman, not about being queer, by the way- for me anyway), I don't really know where to begin because I adhere to so many very feminist ideals that are simply the way I view the world. So, it's hard for me to outline my views because it seems so foreign a concept (it's be like asking someone why they breathe I suppose). Anyway, one thing I can very clearly speak about is my view on pornography. It's harmful to women. It just is. It propagates a negative view of women and, how can that possibly be healthy for a society. I'm not speaking of erotica or sex in general. Sex is a beautiful thing and erotica can be healthy. My point is that as long as women are seen as mere objects, we (as women) will be treated accordingly. However, I don't think censorship (of any kind)is appropriate. As an artist and a student of Art History, censorship is my greatest fear. Woah, kind of got out of control there. Anyway, if you'd like to talk about this more email me.

The wonderful World D'Arte
|
Well, like I said up there, I am an Art History major. I know, one's first response is often, "Hmm, what're you going to do with that?". To which I reply, "A bunch". See, here's my plan. I want to teach college. My area of interest in Art is Abstract Expressionism (well, all of modern really, although minimalism and pop for different reasons than Dada, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism). Francis Bacon and Willem DeKoonig are two of my favourites. So, anyway, I'm gonna get my PhD (only 5 quarters left till I start grad school, yay me!), write, and teach at a small liberal arts college. So there. I'm also a photographer. It's keeps me sane. I mostly stick to black and white (so I can develop my own), man there's just something terribly cool about seeing and portraying a subject and getting a response from a viewer or simply seeing it more clearly yourself, as the photographer, after the fact. I can't really explain it all that well, but oh well, if you're a photographer you know what I mean.

All the Rest
|
Well, "the rest" is a lot. I'm big on reading. Out of control one might say. Right now I'm in the midst of "Infinite Jest". Very very good book. Other books I highly reccomend (for everyone, but especially women): Zami, A New Spelling of My Name The Weetzie Bat series Well of Lonliness Rusty Bernice: A Comedy of Letters Girl, Interrupted The Last Time I Wore a Dress The Bell Jar Backlash
well, I could go on forever. Oh, I almost forgot William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch), fucking genius. I may get beaten for this, but I can't stand Jack Keruoac I'll just get that out there now.
Hmm, oh go out and watch The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love. It's amazing. It's a totally independent film, the actors were all volunteers and it's my favourite movie.
Hmm, musically I like a wide range. Ani DiFranco (seen her 6 times, own all the albums, even the last two which pale in comparison to earlier stuff) is super cool. Phranc kicks ass, as does Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked and Bikini Kill. I love Tricky, Portishead, Dan Bern, The Pixies (and Frank Black since he's been on his own too. I saw him Eugene not too long ago, amazing), Underworld, Orbital, The Orb, some Aphex Twin (although they kind of scare me), Woody and Arlo Guthrie (seeing Arlo play this next week, woo hoo), Simon and Garfunkel, older Madonna, Nina Hagen, oh shit man, I don't know a bunch of stuff. Good thing I work in a record store, huh?
Well, I guess that's all I have to say till I can think of a way to make this site more interesting. If you have any comments or suggestions, please please please email me. This was quite obviously a first effort. (I'm still trying to get a scanned pic of me up and other more appropo pics) Thanks for checking this out.
